A new super campus is to be created as part of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) Millennium Institute.

The new campus will involve a merger of the independent Argyll, Skye and Wester Ross and Lochaber colleges, into a campus dominating Skye.

Mark Batho, Scottish Funding Council chief executive, said the new campus would reflect the needs of the west Highlands.

He said: “These three colleges, working in partnership with North Highland College and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, have achieved a great deal in recent years and this will take things even further.”

The news comes as work on Napier University’s Sighthill campus is well underway with the demolition of the old campus complete.

Fiona Hyslop, education secretary said: “It is an exciting time for Scottish universities. They continue to expand and adapt to research and teaching needs.”

Hyslop added: “I praise the courage and determination of one of Scotlands’ finest research institutions, Napier. The precedent has been firmly set for other establishments.”

Gordon Bushnell, chairman of Skye and Wester Ross College, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for Skye and Wester Ross which is really going to make a difference in providing further education in an area which to date has been relatively poorly served, with the exception of Gaelic medium education at Sabhal Mor Ostaig.”
